Makeup, Costumes, & Hair

The MUCH Department canvasses for costume pieces and materials according to the script and the costume designer’s vision, and assists the cast in styling and makeup.

I’m glad that blueREP gave me a home and a chance to meet so many great people throughout my time in college. My favorite part about this is how everyone is so willing to learn and hone their craft. Seeing this happen in every production really motivated me to keep going, so much so that production work is something I’m pursuing as a career. MUCH in particular is unique in that we work—quite literally—very closely with the cast. We had to remain cool headed, quick, and organized to make sure everyone steps on stage looking the part despite running from one stage entrance to the next. It’s a whole learning process, but I’m grateful to blueREP for giving me so many opportunities to master these skills. If I were to convince someone to try MUCH in blueREP, I would reassure them that you don’t need to have any MUCH skills beforehand. There will always be someone willing to help you develop that skill, be it through a workshop or during hands-on work once the production’s in full swing.

What I loved about MUCH was the costume changes. You wouldn't think that there would be any thrill in this department, but nothing beats scrambling to get someone into a different costume in 5 seconds while getting kneed in the face. There are also the teammates that you can chat and laugh with during shows and not to mention the privileges of backstage and dressing room access.

Working in the production competency has always been a passion of mine, and I'm glad I was able to grow in blueREP! While I started out in a different department, being part of the MUCH team is something I wanted to experience, and I had the opportunity to become the head in the Finale production of my second year. While it was definitely a challenge doing costumes remotely, working in MUCH taught me a lot of valuable lessons in leadership, and improved my skills as a creative. The unpredictability and new-ness of online productions might be intimidating, but the work is just as fulfilling. I was able to grow as a person and as a lover of art — MUCH is just one of the ways an artistic vision comes alive, and I loved not just watching it, but helping it grow from a mere idea to the final cut.
